Open-cell or closed-cell spray foam for a Houston home?

Quick answer

For most Houston attic roof decks, open-cell spray foam is the right choice because it costs less, meets code at the deck in Climate Zone 2A, and air seals just as well. Closed-cell is the right choice for crawl spaces and pier and beam floors, metal buildings, coastal and wind exposed assemblies, and anywhere a vapor retarder or added rigidity matters.

Neither foam is better. They solve different problems, and the right answer depends on the assembly, the exposure and the budget. A contractor who quotes the same product for every job is selling inventory, not a solution.

What is actually different

Density and structure. Open-cell foam is about half a pound per cubic foot. Its cells are open, so it is soft, flexible and vapor open. Closed-cell is about two pounds per cubic foot with sealed cells, so it is rigid, resists water and acts as a vapor retarder at typical thickness.

R-value per inch. Open-cell delivers roughly R-3.5 to R-4 per inch. Closed-cell delivers roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch. Manufacturer data sheets govern the exact figure.

Cost per inch. Closed-cell costs about twice as much per inch. Because it delivers nearly twice the R-value per inch, the cost per assembly is closer than the cost per inch suggests, but open-cell is still cheaper for any assembly where it works.

Air sealing. Both are air barriers at the right thickness. Open-cell needs roughly 3.5 inches to qualify as air impermeable and closed-cell needs about 1.5 inches. In practice both are installed thicker than that to hit the code R-value, so both seal.

Vapor. This is the real decision. Open-cell lets water vapor pass. Closed-cell slows it to Class II vapor retarder levels. In a cold climate, vapor open foam at a roof deck can let moisture reach the sheathing in winter and condense. Houston is not a cold climate.

Why open-cell wins most Houston attics

Greater Houston sits in IECC Climate Zone 2A, hot and humid. The condensation risk that makes closed-cell mandatory at roof decks in northern states does not apply here in the same way. The residential code allows air impermeable insulation at the underside of the roof deck to create an unvented attic, and open-cell qualifies at the thickness we install.

So for the most common job in Houston, an existing home with the ducts and air handler in the attic, open-cell at the deck does everything the homeowner needs: it brings the attic inside the envelope, air seals it, and meets code, at the lower price. Where closed-cell earns its cost

Crawl spaces and pier and beam floors. Ground moisture, occasional standing water and humid air all argue for a foam that does not absorb water and that acts as a vapor retarder. Closed-cell under the floor deck also stiffens it.

Metal buildings. Closed-cell bonds to the panel, stops condensation by moving the dew point into the foam, adds rigidity that quiets oil canning, and delivers real R-value in a layer thin enough to clear purlins and girts. Open-cell on metal is a shortcut that comes back as a moisture problem. More on the metal building page.

Coastal and wind exposed roofs. In League City, Galveston, Baytown and anywhere near the bay, closed-cell at the roof deck bonds the sheathing to the framing and adds measurable uplift resistance. It is not a substitute for proper fastening, but it is a real secondary benefit.

Anywhere the spec says so. Cold storage, food facilities and conditioned commercial buildings are designed with a specific vapor profile. We price what the spec calls for.

Thin cavities. Where there is not room for enough open-cell to hit the target R-value, closed-cell gets there in fewer inches.

The hybrid option

Some assemblies get a flash of closed-cell against the substrate for vapor control and rigidity, then open-cell over it for the rest of the R-value at lower cost. It is a legitimate approach for some coastal roof decks and some commercial walls. It is also more labor, so it only makes sense when the assembly actually needs both properties.

Questions to ask any contractor

  • Which foam are you quoting, and why that one for this assembly?
  • What thickness, and what R-value does that deliver by the manufacturer data sheet?
  • Is an ignition barrier or thermal barrier required over it, and is that in the price?
  • What is the reentry time for the exact product you are spraying?

If the answer to the first question is the same for every building, keep shopping.

Frequently asked questions

Is closed-cell always better because it has a higher R-value?

No. Higher R-value per inch matters when space is limited. In an attic with ten inches of rafter depth, open-cell reaches the target R-value with room to spare at a lower cost. Closed-cell is better where its other properties, water resistance, vapor control and rigidity, are what the assembly needs.

Does open-cell absorb water?

It can hold water if it is soaked, which is why it does not belong in crawl spaces or on metal. At a roof deck in a dry attic it is not exposed to bulk water. If your roof leaks, we find and address that before we spray either foam.

Can you spray closed-cell in my attic if I want the extra strength?

Yes. It costs more per square foot and delivers a stiffer roof assembly. Near the coast we sometimes recommend it. Inland, it is usually money that could go elsewhere in the house, and we will say so.

Which one is better for sound?

Open-cell. Its soft, open structure absorbs sound better, which is why it is the usual choice for interior walls and media rooms.
